When the book starts out, everything seems innocent. This has become one of my favorite books. When Jonas discovers the secret that people are being killed and the baby will be murdered, Jonas runs and leaves the utopia with Gabe. Then, he begins to love this little boy his family is watching. While all this is happening, you realize how bad things are in the society. This makes him almost quit, but the Giver tells Jonas about his daughter. He walked in on the Giver having flashbacks to the war and Jonas accidentally takes the memory. There is a moment when things begin to get real for the character. As he begins, the Giver only gives Jonas good memories. This means he will receive the memories of the past to help the Elders make decisions about the future. It turns out, he has a rare place in society he will become the next Giver. On the day of the Choosing, the elders go past Jonas’s name. Jonas and his friends were finally old enough to get their lifelong jobs for their contribution to society. This was a tradition where kids' lifelong jobs would be chosen until they were ready for The Release. Every year, there is The Cereonomy of the Twelve which is the most important ceremony there is. He lives in a utopian society that doesn’t have feelings and they don’t see color.

While some of the plot twists require certain leaps of logic, this is an excellent read and will be sure to spark conversation and debate at the dinner table.The Giver is about a young boy named Jonas. It is an excellent introduction to both science fiction and dystopian literature, and the language used by Lowry is easy to understand and accessible to even young readers. This should be considered a safe book for most children to read, and the depictions of war and poverty are descriptive, but not graphic.

The book centers largely on his reactions to the hypocrisy that infects Jonas’ world. The plot focuses on Jonas’ training to be the community’s new “Receiver of Memory”, a role that entails much mental and emotional anguish. Set in a community where the citizens are in a forced state of “Sameness” and where everything is regulated through a strict bureaucracy and medical manipulation, Jonas’ trials are riveting and do well to maintain the reader’s attention. Taught in many middle and high schools across the United States, The Giver offers fascinating critiques of equality, fairness, and justice. While the adolescent trials of Jonas are at the same time unique and profoundly familiar for Lowry’s intended audience, adults will find them equally compelling. Set in a dystopian society, The Giver dramatizes the struggles of the protagonist, Jonas. Winner of the prized John Newbery Medal, Lois Lowry paints in subtle strokes and subdued hues in her classic work, The Giver.
